What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the most popular English proficiency tests worldwide. It assesses a candidate’s ability to use the English language in academic, professional, or everyday settings. The test evaluates four key skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. What IELTS Band is Required for Admission in the US?

Most universities in the United States require an IELTS Academic test score for admission. The minimum band score varies depending on the institution and program:

Undergraduate Programs

Typically, a band score of 6.0 to 6.5 is required.

Graduate Programs

A band score of 6.5 to 7.0 is common for admission to master’s or doctoral programs.
In addition to meeting the overall band score, some universities may have specific sectional requirements. For instance, they might expect a minimum score of 6.0 or 6.5 in Writing or Speaking.
